Flip the Question: See failure before it happens

You cannot always see the road to success, but you can always see the roads to failure. Learn the three moves of inversion in three minutes: flip the question, hunt the failures, block them with rules.

The Method

The Flip

Some questions give your brain fog. The flipped version gives it a list. Try both:

The normal question

"How do I give a great presentation?"

Ask your brain. See what comes back:

The flipped question

"How would I guarantee an embarrassing one?"

Suddenly your brain gets specific: never practice out loud. Bring a file that will not open. Read every word off the slides. You can see the disaster in detail.

Feel the difference? Your brain is bad at imagining success and brilliant at imagining disaster. Inversion turns that talent into a tool: hunt down every path to failure, then block each one with a rule. What remains is success.

Next week you give a big presentation. Step one: collect every way to guarantee it goes embarrassingly wrong; the cards below hold the most common ones. Step two: bulletproof it. Charlie Munger, one of the most celebrated investors of the 20th century, put it this way: "Invert, always invert. Tell me where I'm going to die, so I never go there."

This is not just a school trick, and step four is the hard one. The engineers behind the 1986 Challenger launch had done steps one to three: they knew cold weather could destroy a rubber ring, and the rule existed. On the coldest launch morning in NASA history, under enormous pressure, nobody held the rule. Seven astronauts died.
