Data Science to save the bees — by J. Merkert, teacher at St. Dominikus Gymnasium in Karlsruhe

The Karlsruhe Institute of Technology developed an online course on database programming, studied specifically for its effectiveness with female students. Our school, noted for having strong female computer science groups, participated in this research initiative.

Students in grades 8–9 in the IMP profile subject (Informatics-Mathematics-Physics) completed the course in October 2021 and provided feedback via online forms both before and after.

Results

The key finding: The online course proved highly suitable for independently learning SQL commands — with an engaging bee-related context.

Although databases are typically covered in upper-level curricula, the "Rescue the Bees" online course allows a meaningful introduction within a double lesson. Contemporary complex software systems — including school websites, learning platforms, and administrative programs — rely on SQL databases.

The students were enthusiastic participants, demonstrating that an engaging context significantly lowers the barrier to abstract computer science concepts.
